Building a Tower

From Mrs. McCarty's 2nd grade class: Groups of 3-5 worked to try and construct a tower made of nothing but 15 sheets of paper, a few paper clips, one yard of tape and 2 small plastic cups. Seems impossible, right?! Did I mention it has to be 12" tall and be able to support a book for 1 minute?! Yeah.. We tried, we failed, we tried, we failed. Then, we saw an example, and that it COULD be done, because our teacher would never give us a task that sets us up for failure. Then, we re-discussed, retried, and we made it happen!!! I totally wish I had after pics, but I was so excited that I went right into the lesson. Ask your child about it! Here are some pics of their efforts!!

Awesome Effort

Ms. Ruth's class is demonstrating the 7 Habits by Beginning with the End in Mind and Putting First Things First. Three students were awarded for their awesome effort. Way to go Hadley Horne for completing 15 Dreambox lessons, and Kourtlon Harris and Ja'Kaisa Leavell for their extreme effort in Reading.
Ms. Lusk wanted to share a couple pictures of her sweet kiddos doing Lucy Calkins "shared reading"! It's one of their favorite parts of the day! Our shared reading stamina is up to 25 minutes.. And that is only because we have to stop to go to lunch! These kids love reading books and love talking about the books even more! Enjoy!

The Harralson Blog

I have to let you in on a little secret….I have some AMAZING “Super” readers this year!  We are learning how to read some of our favorite, old storybooks by remembering what we know and reading the pictures.  This week we learned how to read using character voices with the book, The Three Billy Goats Gruff.  Our new curriculum suggested to wrap up favorite, old storybooks.  Check out their smiles in the picture!

Here are some videos of our “Super” readers:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iqDnTugnsws

I’m trying to incorporate new games into our vocabulary instruction this year.  Our new favorite game is vocabulary basketball.  The boys took on the girls and created their team names:  Tigers vs. Butterflies.

Finally, we learned about shadows this Friday during science.  We went outside and traced shadows of our farm animals.  The sun was beautiful outside!  Just a reminder that National Teddy Bear Day is this Friday, September 9th and students may bring in a small, stuffed animal to celebrate for show and tell.  Please make sure their animal is small and can fit in their backpack.
