On Halloween the fourth grade and Mrs. Harrralson's kindergarten class participated in the inaugural Vocabulary Parade! Kids dressed up as a vocabulary word and then got to share their definition and rational behind their costume with one another! The kids had a blast and really were creative with their costumes! Here is Ms. Coomes' class with their fryar model presentation behind them! They worked very hard on these amazing presentations!

Take a look at some pictures from the 4th grade publishing party. The students did a great job presenting their stories to their parents. I believe their were some future authors there that night!

Parent Teacher Conferences
Parents please make sure you attend your child's parent teacher conference. This year you might be lucky enough to have the conference led by your child. Some classes are using the Leader in Me model and the child is assuming the responsibility of reporting his or her progress to you. As always your child's teacher will be there to clear up any questions or concerns you may have.
As I have explained before we are a team and we are thankful to have you care enough about your child's education to show up to this conference. Parents thank you for all that you do for your child and our school!

Helping the Less Fortunate
Food donations are being collected! Third graders are collecting the below items from each classroom every morning. So far we've had 83 food donations! Jewell Millay and Ruth are in the lead!
3rd Grade Conferences
3rd graders are so excited about their student-led conferences this week! They are going to work throughout the week on perfecting their leadership notebooks to show their families! At the student-led conferences, each student will get to show their loved ones all their accomplishments so far this school year, and what they've been learning! All 3rd grade conferences are THIS Thursday and Friday after school. Be looking for reminder notes to go home with your child about what time your conference is scheduled for. Most importantly - don't forget to bring your superstar 3rd grader with you when you come! See you soon!
Too Much Screen Time
Click on the link below to read a great article about the dangers of too much screen time. I know I am guilty of giving my children too much screen time and after reading this article I am going to be changing how much screen time they are allowed.

“Super Readers” and “Scientists"
Our kids are becoming little scientists! This week, we built rockets in our STEAM club. Check out our launch: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FkauP63IG6o&feature=youtu.be
Mrs. Williams and I collaborated this week for science, teaching all about the different types of weather. A guest appearance was made by Juan, the puppet. We made a home-made tornado out of 2, 2 liter coke bottles.
To be better super readers, we have been practicing retelling the details of the story. This week, we practiced retelling our story of “The Three Little Pigs”. Check out our super readers:

We want to give a shout out to first grade for coming in and sharing their books with our class! Thanks for showing us how to write with strong muscles.
A reminder about our upcoming vocabulary parade on October 31st. I can’t wait to see all the vocabulary words that we will learn!

Welcome Back
Parents if you notice your child wanting to go to bed earlier than usual don't get alarmed. Coming back from a break is always tough on our little guys and girls. Plus, I don't know about you all but having it get dark earlier makes me a little tired, too.
Please remember that we need your child sitting in class by 8:05. If your child arrives at school later than 8:05 you are required to sign your child in. We start the morning news promptly at 8:05 and there are many important messages that are delivered to students by our first class news crew. The doors to the front porch open at 7:15 and the doors leading into school open at 7:25. We serve breakfast in the cafeteria from 7:25 to 7:50. If your child arrives later than 7:50, he or she will get a bag breakfast to take to class.
This Monday we had 46 students absent at the start of school. 18 of those students eventually made it to school. It is very important that your child attends every day because we do not want them to get behind with their school work. Students today have lessons that build upon each other and when a student misses it makes it harder for the students to grasp the concepts that were already taught. If your child is running a fever, please by all means keep them at home.
With the flu season getting ready to start we need all of our student to practice good hygiene habits. Please have them washing their hands as much as possible and keeping things that aren't food out of their mouths. I have three boys myself and I am constantly making them wash their hands and telling them to get their headphones, other cords and fingers out of their mouths. We also need to practice covering coughs and sneezed correctly. I know growing up I was told to cover my mouth with my hands when I coughed our sneezed. Today, the proper way to cover a cough or a sneeze is by raising the inside of your elbow to your mouth. Just tell your child to "dab" and they will understand what it looks like.
Parents thank you for all that you do for your children and our school. We love you!

Live Animals!
We got to experience seeing a few live animals this week. Our trip to Trunnel’s was a lot of fun and the kids had a blast seeing the farm animals, picking a pumpkin, and drinking an apple slushy!
I was excited when I saw that I had a package in the office that said we had live animals in a box – mealworms! The students got to see our mealworms molt and released them into nature today.
In our STEAM club, we learned how to code with robots to knock down structures. We also built structures out of spaghetti noodles and marshmallows.
Thanks again for coming out to our Harvest Hoedown! The kids had such a great time!
These next few weeks, we will be learning about scarecrows, pumpkins, bats, and spiders. Don’t forget your parent/teacher conference date and time. I am so excited about showing you how your child is growing in our class :)

Parent Council
Our parent council will meet on Thursday, October 20th from 3:15pm to 4:00pm. There will be snacks and free childcare is being offered. We look forward to seeing you this Thursday.
Spooky to Beautiful
Ms. Vincent’s class has been having so much fun learning! In writing, we practiced our narrative writing skills by writing scary stories! We looked at pictures of abandoned buildings for inspiration and used our 5 senses to give our listeners chills! To make it even spookier, we turned off our lights and shared the stories by flashlight!
Also, before fall break, we released our butterflies into the wild. We watched them grow from caterpillars, to a chrysalis, and transform into beautiful butterflies! They were so happy to enjoy the sunshine! Watch our video to see the release in action!

The Police Are Our Friends
Last Friday, ELA used our police officer community helper friends to stop traffic on hwy 54 in order to safely walk across the road. We visited Kight home store to see measuring tools in action. It was a great summary of our measuring unit. Ask our kiddos what distance is!! Almost all of the can tell you "how far something goes." :)
