No R Word

Here are some pictures of Mrs. Millay's class and Mrs. Wahler's class with Shelly from  the Wendell Foster Center and her No R Word presentation.  The kids were very well behaved, listened well, treated Shelly with respect and asked her excellent questions.
Shelly is quite the speaker and presenter. Shelly doesn't let her disability stop her from doing what she wants to do. Even though she has a disability and has to use a wheelchair, she has a job and makes an income. Shelly is a prime example of how having a growth mindset can lead a person to accomplish any goal that he or she sets.
Estes loves you Shelly and our school is proud to call you a friend!

Estes News Makes Local News

The Estes News Team made the local news last Thursday. I hope you had a chance to see the amazing job our news crew did. TJ Parker of WFIE 14 came and taped our news show for a segment on channel 14.
These students under the direction of Mrs. Daughtry broadcast the Estes News 4 days a week. We are so proud of our Estes News team and they are just another example of how Estes Elementary is not a normal elementary school.

The Sounds of a Book

Mrs. Etienne has been working with fourth grade students on how to make books come alive. Students are working on making a soundtrack for various children's books. What a cool project to do with books and music. I can't wait to see I mean hear the final product!

More Penguins!

Mrs. Blevins class went with habit 6 (Synergize) of leader in me to help complete their penguin posters.
Our Estes students sure do love penguins. Or could it be that our Estes teachers love those cute penguins?!

The Other Side of a Rainbow

Last week in science class our first grade classes talked about how rainbows were made.  If you have a child in first grade ask your child how they appear.
They were able to create a "rainbow" by using a mixture of milk, liquid soap and food coloring.  This experiment created a chemical reaction and an explosion of color. The experiment also lead into the discussion of how magnets attract and repel.

The Book Fair was a Success

Students were excited to visit the book fair. If you didn't get a chance to buy a book this time, we will have another book fair later this year.

No Stinky Breath

Community Dental Clinic came to Estes to discuss good dental Hygiene.
Students received a goody bag to help them get a jump on good dental practices.

Big Leaders Teaching Small Leaders

Mr. Murphy's leaders taught Mrs. Holly's preschoolers about the 7 habits. Mrs. Holly's class finished reading the 7 habits book and she wanted her  kids to see how the habits are used in older classrooms. The 3rd grade students showed the preschool students the hand signs for the habits as well as examples of the habits in their own words. Mrs. Holly's students were an excellent audience and sat and listened to the presentations. By learning from their older peers, the preschool students were able to make connections to their lives through the older kids examples. They were relevant examples that her kids could relate to easily.  Mrs. Holly said she was very impressed by Mr. Murphy's leaders and enjoyed the partnership.

A Gritty Family

The story below is something that shows the power of children. This story focuses on a student who wants to learn and another student that wants to help students learn. We are so lucky to have both students at Estes!
Alica Francisco who is in Mrs. Alley's kindergarten class was struggling to learn her sight words at home because of a language barrier. She could have easily given up and used her home situation as an excuse for not learning. Did she give up? No, she didn't! She went to her 1st grade cousin who also attends Estes for help. Aracelli Francisco in Mrs. Lanham's room has been helping Alica learn her words at home. Aracelli has helped Alica learn 75 words! These are the types of students that we need not only at Estes but in the world because they show GRIT and a willingness to learn and teach!

Leprechauns Invade Estes

Are those pesky little leprechauns invading Estes this year? Ms. Manqueros and her students will find out tomorrow. Here is how they are going to find out. The students decorated Styrofoam cups on the hope that leprechauns will come into the room and shrink the cups into tiny little hats. Ms. Manqueros thinks there will be some St. Patrick's magic in her room tomorrow. We will find out tomorrow.

Penguins in Kentucky?

Mrs. Wahler's students have been busy the last few weeks. Here are some pics of the students synergizing on their penguin posters.  First, they worked together to do penguin research, then they collaborated to create an informational poster.  Finally, they presented the poster to their classmates.
You will also see pics of her class during career day.

One Hot Learning Experience

Mrs. Holly and Mrs. Paula had their preschool students studying community helpers and they took a field trip to Fire Station No. 2. to learn what fire officers do. They also received a crash course in fire safety.

The Force is Strong

The students in Mrs. Lancaster's class have been learning about friction. They tested toy cars on various surfaces to compare rates of friction. They combined their knowledge of forces and motion along with measurement and time to determine which surface the toy cars traveled the fastest and the farthest on. They also synergized to complete the experiment and created varying heights of inclined planes to test if that helped their cars travel faster and farther.

1/2 Grit + 1/2 Grit = A Whole Lot of Grit!

Mrs. Huskisson has a child in her room showing extremely hard work and grit in finding the equivalent fractions to 3/4. She also worked hard all week on partitioning the number line and look at that number line! Kayla Hernandez is working hard!!!

Sharing the Knowledge

Take a look at the collaboration between  Mrs. Wahlers' first graders and Ms. Huskissons' third graders. Third graders  practice being reading leaders and first graders show off their amazing reading skills.
