Math Challenge #4

Math Challenge #4

1.       During the last wind storm there was a sandwich that was blown to the top of a 27 foot oak tree. This sandwich attracted a very hungry caterpillar that was determined to reach the delicious sandwich.  This caterpillar could travel 4ft. during the day before he needed to go to sleep at night. While he was sleeping he would slide back 2 feet. How many days will it take him to reach the delicious sandwich?

2.      Dr. Vick wants to make sure the concession stands at all of the gyms are making a profit. Popcorn seems to be the best seller at all of the concession stands.  A 2 pound bag of popcorn costs $5.00 at Wal-Mart. You can make 20 bags of popcorn from the 2 pound bag of popcorn. The concession stand charges 50 cent per bag. How much of a profit are the gyms making off of the 2 pound bag of popcorn? Also, Dr. Vick wants to know how many bags of popcorn to buy if we want to make a 25 dollar profit?

3.      Target has the new Wii-U for sale for $250. You and your brother have been saving for a long time. You have $68 and your brother has $62. If your brother receives $5 a week for allowance and you receive $5 a week for allowance, how many more weeks will it take you and your brother to get the new Wii-U?

Math Challenge #3

1. I am glad the snail was able to get out of the well, but this time a caterpillar fell down a bigger well. The caterpillar can travel three feet a day before he goes to bed. When he goes to bed he slides down one foot. The well is 12 feet tall. How many days will it take him to get out of the well?

2. The Big Dipper wants to make a profit on their hamburgers. A pound of ground beef costs $5. They can make five hamburgers per pound. They charge $2 per hamburger. How many hamburgers will they have to sell to make a $20 dollar profit. Remember you have to factor in what ground beef costs to help you solve this profit problem?

Math Challenge #2

Are you ready for math challenge number 2?

1. One day a snail fell into a well and he was determined to get back to his family. The well was 10 feet tall.  Every morning he would climb 2 feet, but a night he would slide back one foot. How many days did he take for him to reach the top of the well?

2. Ellis Park is getting ready for the new horse racing season. They are looking to build some new stables. Each new stable can hold 9 horses. It looks like there will be 270 horses at the park. How many stables will they need to build?

3. Ellis Park is also revamping their food selections with higher price hot dogs.  They want to make a profit so we need to calculate this right the first time. They can buy a package of good quality hot dogs for $10.00. Each package holds 5 hot dogs. If the park wants to make a $10 profit from each package, how much will they have to charge for each hot dog? Remember to make a profit you have to consider how much you paid for the product.

Elijah is Mr. Map!

Why is Elijah Mr. Map? Take a look at what he did! He went up 30 points in reading, 24 points in math and 19 points in language. This is why Elijah is Mr. Map! Elijah is another reason Estes is climbing the mountain of success!

Justin is Awesome!

Justin gets the I'M AWESOME Award for solving 16x3615 in a way that I have never seen before. Justin was not taught an algorithm and came up with his way through trial and error. Way to Go Justin! Justin is another example of how Estes is climbing the mountain of SUCCESS!

Friendly Math Competition

I am sending out some problems to my two favorite schools-Estes and Cravens!  I would like to see both of the schools in the top 5 of the state.  How are we going to do this? I will tell you how and that is by challenging you both with some questions. I want to see what students in third and fourth grade can solve these problems.  Are you up for the challenge? I hope so!

As you know some bottles holds 1 liter. 1 liter (1 L) is equal to 1,000 milliliters (ml).

1.      Billy drank 5 liters of soda one week. Susan drank 4 liters of soda the same week. What is the total number of milliliters they drank?

2.      How many more milliliters would they have had to drink to reach 15,000 milliliters?

3.      Tommy could only drink half of his 1 liter bottle. How many milliliters were left in the bottle?

4.      Later that day Tommy started drinking what was left in his bottle. He could only finish half of what was left. How many milliliters are left now?

5.      Rick had a party and gave everyone a one liter bottle of Gatorade. When the party was over there were 8 bottles that were half full. How many milliliters were left to drink?

6.      How many liters does that equal?

7.      How many milliliters would be left in the bottle if I drank 1/4 of the bottle?

8.      If I had 4 bottles of soda and all of them had ¾ of the soda missing, how many milliliters would I have?

9.      After the game at the high school the equipment manager picked up the one liter sports bottles. 6 of the bottles were half full and 6 of the bottles were a ¼ full. How many milliliters were left in the bottles? How many liters would that make?
