Awards Assembly

Take a look at all the awards that were earned at our latest awards assembly. We love all the hard work, grit and growth mindset that was shown last nine weeks by our students. If you didn't earn an award this past nine weeks continue to work hard and do your best. Dream, believe, work hard and you will achieve your goals.

Leader in Me Family Night

We had our biggest turnout of the year and had a blast learning about how to be a leader. If you missed this past month's Leader in Me night, please try to attend the next one.

What a Week in Mrs. Harralson's Class!

This week was rather exciting!  Not only did we start our after school club and celebrate our perfect attendance, our class made the 44 news with our new bicycle pedal desks.  These desks have been a blessing to our classroom, helping us focus and learn all at the same time while exercising our legs.  I have uploaded the news video under the tab in the  Photo Gallery called "Videos".  I couldn't find the video online but I used my phone to show the students.  Please ignore my excitement in the background - I was super excited that the students made the news!  Click on the link to read the article here: http://44news.wevv.com/owensboro-students-use-pedal-desks/
In our after school club this week, the students practiced their sight words using paint.  It was super fun!
Remember, Thursday is our 100th day of school.  I can't wait to see your child's 100 year old outfit.  We have so many fun activities planned for that day.
I want to share a great website with you where your child can listen to so many great books:  www.tumblebooklibrary.com

It's a Matter of Properties

ELA is working on a unit about the properties of matter. This week as we learned about solids we created sculptures. We used blocks, magnets, clay, and even ice.

Learning About Food Preparation

Here are some pictures from our ELA classes. They made vanilla pudding with crumbled graham crackers and bananas that they cut with a plastic knife! The ELA teachers would like to thank Melissa Webb from the Daviess County Cooperative Extension Office for helping with this activity.

Flashlight Reading

Mrs. Millay's class has started "Flashlight Friday".  Every Friday they turn off all the lights,  close the curtains, and use their flashlight for read to self time. You should have seen the voracious reading. You could hear a pin drop. Mrs. Millay also uses a flashlight for her read aloud of Charlotte's web.

Harralson's Kids

Happy New Year!  I am so excited about 2016 and all we will accomplish in our classroom!
This Thursday, January 14th at 5:30pm, your child's artwork and writing will be on displayed in the PRC during our Parent Council Meeting.  There will be drinks and snacks provided.  Please come and check out your child's artwork!
The 100th day of school is coming up and we will be celebrating by bringing in 100 items of something on January 21st.  Your child could bring in 100 of something.  For example: 100 pennies, 100 cotton balls, 100 cherrios, etc. in a ziplock baggie.  We will be doing some experiments with these items.  They will be returned back home the same day.  I'm also encouraging your child to dress up like an 100 year old person to celebrate our 100th day of school :).  I already have my walker and wig ready!
In writing, we are working on the following skills:  putting punctuation at the end of the sentence, capitolizing the first letter in a sentence, always capitolizing the letter "I", using finger spaces, and stretching out words.  Encourage your child this week to write you a sentence about their day practicing these concepts.
SHOW AND TELL FRIDAY is this week.  Your child may bring in their favorite stuffed animal or toy that they love to share with the class on January 15th.
Here is a picture of 2 friends using their motor skills to build a house.

The Taste of Division

Ms. Vincent's class started learning about division with a yummy hands-on review! In 3rd grade, students learned that division is all about breaking something down in to smaller parts. During this activity, each student was given a different number of goldfish. Students counted their total number of goldfish (their whole, or dividend) and then divided it by a variety of numbers (a divisor). To finish the lesson, students wrote an equation to represent one of the division problems they did -  explaining which number was the dividend, divisor, and quotient. After a student shared their equation with the class they were allowed to eat their goldfish! Yum!

It's a State of Matter

ELA students learned about the properties of matter last week. If you ask them what matter is, they can tell you "what something is made of." In these photos students are changing the state of matter.
They are making water evaporate faster by using a hair dryer and melting ice faster by applying heat. They also turned a liquid to a solid when we made homemade ice cream :)  They had such a fun week of experimenting with matter!!

Snowman Writing

Have you ever wanted to become a snowman? Well, here is a little writing assignment to explain how it happened. Restate the questions and you will have your very own snowman story to share with your family. Have fun!

How I Became a Snowman
What is your name and what are you?
Describe the weather outside and what you were doing the day you turned into a snowman.
Describe what caused you to turn into a snowman.
What was the first thing you did you did when you realized you were a snowman?
Who knows about you being a snowman?
Where do you live now that you are a snowman?
What do you do during the day?

Finish the story-do you turn back or stay a snowman-make sure to include a lot of details.
